Five major Canadian news media companies have filed legal action against OpenAI, alleging it routinely violates copyright and online terms of use.
Torstar, Postmedia, The Globe and Mail, The Canadian Press and CBC filed the lawsuit in Ontario Superior Court on Thursday, seeking damages to be determined at trial.
“OpenAI is exploiting and profiting from this content without obtaining permission or paying any compensation to the content owners,” the publishers said in a statement Friday.
An OpenAI spokesperson said its models were trained on “publicly available data, underpinned by fair use and relevant international copyright principles.”
An OpenAI spokesperson also said the company is working with news publishers on how their content is displayed, attributed and linked to, including ways to opt out.
